VicPD Celebrates Daisy the Service Dog’s 5th Birthday
On October 14, 2023, the Victoria Police Department (VicPD) celebrated the fifth birthday of their beloved service dog, Daisy. This special occasion also marks nearly two years since Daisy was sworn in as a dedicated Operational Stress Intervention (OSI) Dog, playing a vital role in supporting the mental well-being of officers and staff within the department.
Daisy’s Unique Role at VicPD
Daisy, a Labrador retriever, was specifically trained to provide comfort and reduce stress among personnel exposed to potentially traumatic incidents. Unlike traditional service dogs that assist individual handlers, Daisy’s role encompasses the entire team, offering a calming presence to all who need it.
“Daisy has become an invaluable member of our team, providing critical support and contributing to a healthier work environment,” said Detective Sgt. Matt King of VicPD’s Special Victims Unit. He emphasized the importance of recognizing both her birthday and the approaching anniversary of her service, highlighting the positive impact she has made in a relatively short period.
Daisy’s journey began when she was donated to VicPD by Wounded Warriors Canada in partnership with BC & Alberta Guide Dogs, which provided her extensive training and handler preparation. The organization states that training an OSI dog costs over $35,000, underscoring the investment made in her development.
A Bright Future Ahead
As part of the seventh OSID team formed by BC & Alberta Guide Dogs, Daisy works alongside her handlers, Detective Sgt. Matt King and Ryan Denninger, Supervisor of Jail Guards and Special Municipal Constables. Together, they embody the department’s commitment to mental health and well-being.
According to VicPD, service dogs typically retire at the age of ten, allowing the team to look forward to several more years of Daisy’s gentle companionship. Her presence has not only brightened the lives of those at VicPD but has also contributed to a healthier and more supportive workplace.
As the department celebrates Daisy’s birthday today, they also reflect on the significant strides made in promoting mental health awareness, thanks in part to her unique contributions. Daisy’s journey is a testament to the positive impact that well-trained service animals can have in high-stress environments.
