Iconic Golden Lion Restaurant in South Surrey to Close After 50 Years
The Golden Lion, a beloved restaurant in South Surrey that has served the community for over 50 years, is set to close its doors permanently on August 31, 2023. Located at the intersection of King George Boulevard and 24 Avenue, the establishment has cited “upcoming land development” as the reason for its closure. This marks the end of an era for a venue that has become a staple for generations of diners.
A notice shared earlier this summer expressed gratitude to patrons, stating, “We are deeply grateful for the support you and your families have shown us over the years.” The message reflects the restaurant’s long history, having opened around 1970. Many community members shared their fond memories on social media following the announcement. Comments noted the restaurant’s humble beginnings as a house with just a few tables and its evolution over the decades.
Community Reflections and Memories
Local resident Brent Graham fondly recalled, “The food was always excellent,” while Heidi Jensen expressed her sadness, saying, “Will miss Connie; she has been there forever!” Their sentiments were echoed by others who took to social media to celebrate the restaurant’s legacy. Melissa Roberts shared that the Golden Lion has been her family’s favorite Chinese restaurant since the 1980s, highlighting the personal connections forged over the years.
Longtime employee Connie has been a familiar face for many customers, guiding them through various life experiences. Another comment from Michelle Adams Scott noted, “We have enjoyed them for 25 years! Some of the hardest-working, friendliest staff.” The restaurant has clearly fostered a sense of community and belonging that many will miss dearly.
Historical Significance and Future Developments
The Golden Lion faced a significant challenge in 2007 when an early morning fire caused approximately $100,000 in damage, destroying part of the building and its supplies. Fortunately, the restaurant reopened a year later, continuing its tradition of serving delicious meals to loyal customers. As the closure approaches, many online commenters have speculated about the future of the site, including what will happen to its iconic neon lion sign.
The one-acre property is currently listed by Colliers Canada as a “compelling opportunity for both owner-users and developers.” The listing highlights the potential for a mixed-use multifamily development that aligns with the City of Surrey’s vision for urban densification and walkable communities. While the asking price remains undisclosed, interest in the site is expected to be high.
The restaurant’s closure notice expresses hope that the location will “continue to grow, evolve, and serve the community in new and meaningful ways.” There is also a possibility of reconnecting with patrons in a new location in the future, offering a glimmer of hope for fans of the Golden Lion.
For those wishing to take home a piece of history, the restaurant invites visitors to stop by on September 1 to collect plates or cups as keepsakes. The Golden Lion may be closing, but its impact on the community will undoubtedly endure, marked by the memories and experiences shared by its patrons over the decades.
