Sault Ste. Marie Chamber Awards Honours Local Leaders
Chief Karen Bell of the Garden River First Nation has been awarded the prestigious ATHENA Award for 2026 by the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce. This accolade is bestowed upon individuals who significantly contribute to their communities, particularly in empowering women to achieve their professional aspirations. The award ceremony took place on March 15, 2024, at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Sault Ste. Marie Waterfront.
Alongside Bell, Brianne Pringle was recognized with the ATHENA Young Professional Award. Pringle, a graduate of Algoma University, currently serves as the vice-president of human resources at Heliene. This award highlights the achievements of leaders under 40 who showcase excellence, creativity, and initiative in their respective fields.
The ATHENA Award program aims to promote the advancement of women in business and leadership roles. Chief Bell has been acknowledged for her impactful work within the community, fostering an environment that supports women’s growth and empowerment. Pringle’s recognition also marks an important step in acknowledging the contributions of younger professionals in the region.
During the ceremony, both recipients expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the importance of community support in their journeys. Bell noted that mentorship and collaboration are vital in creating opportunities for women, while Pringle highlighted the role of innovative leadership in driving change.
