Jeep Enhances Wrangler Stability, Achieves Better Crash Ratings
The 2026 Jeep Wrangler has undergone significant engineering improvements, leading to enhanced stability during crash tests. The latest assessments from the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) indicate that the revised model performs considerably better than its predecessors, which previously struggled with stability during small-overlap front crash tests.
In earlier evaluations, the IIHS identified a tendency for the Wrangler to tip onto its passenger side during these tests, resulting in a Marginal rating. This issue was first noted in the 2019 model and persisted in the 2022 version despite attempts by Jeep to rectify the problem. The IIHS has now confirmed that modifications have made a positive impact on the vehicle’s performance.
Key Changes Boost Crash Test Ratings
While the IIHS did not disclose specific details about the changes made, they highlighted modifications to the frame rails as a crucial factor in improving the Wrangler’s stability. These adjustments are designed to prevent the vehicle from tipping over under certain conditions. As a result, the 2026 Wrangler now achieves an Acceptable rating in this critical crash test, a significant improvement over its previous performance.
These enhancements will apply to all Wrangler models manufactured after October 2025. Following similar modifications, the 2026 Jeep Gladiator has also received an Acceptable rating, improving from its previous Marginal rating.
The implications of these changes extend beyond safety ratings. Jeep, which saw a decline in overall sales by approximately 11% in 2025, hopes that improved safety features will attract more customers. A total of 36,214 new Jeeps were sold in Canada last year, with 12,952 of those being Wrangler models. This means that roughly one in three vehicles sold under the Jeep brand in Canada was a Wrangler, underscoring its importance to the company’s lineup.
Future Prospects for Jeep
The enhancements to the Wrangler are part of a broader effort by Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, to improve the safety and performance of its vehicles. As the automotive industry increasingly focuses on safety ratings and consumer confidence, these changes could play a vital role in reversing the sales decline.
Consumers looking for a vehicle that combines rugged performance with improved safety features may find the 2026 Jeep Wrangler an appealing option. As the brand continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these changes will influence sales and customer satisfaction moving forward.
