Youth Empowerment Program Launches to Unlock Trades Skills
A new initiative aimed at empowering youth from marginalized communities has been launched in Esquimalt, British Columbia. The Trades Explorer Program, developed by Fusion Rise, is designed to equip participants with essential skills and exposure to various trades. This program specifically targets newcomers and young individuals who may not have previously had the opportunity to explore careers in the trades until much later in their lives.
“One of our main goals is to open doors for these young people,” stated Oneil Randall, founder and executive director of Fusion Rise. He emphasized the importance of providing hands-on experience, mentorship, and the confidence needed to navigate career opportunities. The program aims to ignite interest in multiple trades while fostering teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership skills.
Program Details and Impact
The inaugural cohort of the Trades Explorer Program commenced in September 2023, offering six weeks of intensive skill-building activities. The program currently serves ten participants, aged between 10 and 24, with three individuals having arrived in Canada less than two months ago. For these newcomers, the program acts as a crucial stepping stone, helping them feel welcomed and integrated into their new environment.
Fusion Rise is a Black-led, registered charity based in Victoria, focusing on uplifting marginalized and equity-deserving communities. With the current cohort made possible through the support of the Victoria Foundation, the organization seeks to expand the program in the future, aiming to reach even more youth in need.
The program partners with several organizations, including the Foundation for Black Communities, Home Depot, and the Vancouver Island Caribbean Hub. These collaborations highlight a community commitment to fostering a supportive environment for aspiring tradespeople.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Fusion Rise plans to enhance the program offerings and increase the number of participants in subsequent cohorts. By continuing to provide access to essential skills and mentorship, the organization is determined to make a lasting impact on the lives of young individuals in Victoria and beyond.
As the Trades Explorer Program progresses, its influence on the personal and professional development of its participants stands to further demonstrate the value of community-driven initiatives in addressing the needs of marginalized youth. The success of this program could serve as a model for similar initiatives across Canada and other regions, reinforcing the importance of inclusion and opportunity for all young people.
