High school students in southern Alberta are set to benefit from enhanced educational opportunities as the Alberta Government announces an investment of approximately $4.5 million in dual-credit programming. This funding will enable students in Grades 10 to 12 to earn both high school and post-secondary credits while gaining valuable experience in various career pathways.

The funding allocation includes $1.6 million dedicated to creating 33 new dual-credit courses, while $2.8 million will focus on enhancing existing programs. Additionally, $475,000 will be allocated from Alberta Assisted Living and Social Supports for new and improved health care assistance programs. The Palliser School Division is the only local school authority to secure funding under this initiative.

Jason Kupery, Associate Superintendent of Learning Services for Palliser, confirmed that the division will receive $150,000 this year. He emphasized the importance of expanding dual-credit programming for students preparing for their next educational steps. “Dual Credit is vital to exposing students to potential post-secondary pathways and allows them to feel confidence that they can succeed at a post-secondary level. It is also essential to creating a smoother transition to the post-secondary world for students,” Kupery stated.

New Opportunities in Southern Alberta

The announcement coincides with the upcoming opening of the Southern Alberta Collegiate Institute in early 2024, which will offer dual-credit pathways in trades and agriculture. This facility will be located within Lethbridge Polytechnic, where students will collaborate with instructors from the institution. Kupery highlighted the importance of this partnership: “We are being intentional with including LP as we want to create more awareness of trades programs and provide a link to LP.”

Palliser’s funding is designed to enhance educational resources significantly. Of the $150,000, $100,000 is earmarked as an enhancement grant to purchase equipment that supports dual-credit pathways across schools. Students from Noble Central School in Nobleford and Carmangay School will engage in practical projects, including constructing sheds.

An additional $50,000 is designated as a start-up grant for promoting technology-related programs, including design, drafting, and architecture. Kupery mentioned the potential introduction of courses in Game Design Technology and 3D Architecture, which will be shared with other school divisions in southern Alberta to maximize student access.

The Palliser School Division operates 29 schools across the region, and this funding initiative aims to enhance educational pathways for a broader spectrum of students. A complete list of recipients of the funding can be found in the Alberta Government’s official news release.

This investment marks a significant step towards enriching educational experiences and ensuring that students are well-prepared for their future academic and career endeavors.
