Logan Paul Sells Rare Pokémon Card for $16.5 Million at Auction
Logan Paul has made headlines once again, this time by selling a rare Pokémon card for a staggering $16.5 million at an auction hosted by Goldin Auctions. The sale of the Pikachu Illustrator card, known as the most coveted trading card in the world, marks a significant moment in the collectibles market.
The auction, which concluded on March 11, 2024, attracted considerable attention as Paul’s card was initially purchased for $5.275 million five years ago. This impressive markup has reportedly netted the influencer and WWE star over $8 million in profit after accounting for auction fees. During a live stream on YouTube, Paul expressed his disbelief, stating, “Oh my gosh, this is crazy,” as confetti fell to celebrate the conclusion of the auction.
Record-Breaking Auction Draws Intense Bidding
The bidding process for the Pikachu Illustrator card, one of only 39 ever produced for a Pokémon illustration competition in the late 1990s, spanned 42 days. The final price was reached after a flurry of last-minute bids, escalating from an initial offering of $6.882 million to the final auction total of $16.492 million. Paul commented, “We may have tired someone out,” reflecting on the intense competition among bidders.
A representative from Guinness World Records confirmed that this sale set a new record for the most expensive trading card sold at auction. Notably, the card was presented in a custom necklace, which Paul wore during his appearance at WrestleMania 38, and he promised to hand-deliver it to the winning bidder.
Pokémon Collectibles Thrive in Market
The Pokémon franchise has established itself as a global giant, surpassing even Disney and Star Wars as the highest-grossing media franchise. According to Ken Goldin, founder and CEO of Goldin Auctions, Pokémon cards have appreciated significantly in value, outpacing traditional sports cards and outstripping the S&P 500 stock market by 3,000 percent over the past two decades.
Goldin described the Pikachu Illustrator card as “the holy grail of all Pokémon cards,” emphasizing its rarity and the fact that it is the only Illustrator card graded as a Grade 10 by the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA). This grade signifies that the card is virtually flawless, making it highly sought after by collectors.
Logan Paul’s journey to acquiring this ultra-rare card began in July 2021 when he traded a PSA Grade 9 Pikachu Illustrator card and $4 million in cash to secure it. As of now, only 20 Illustrator cards have been graded by PSA, with Paul’s card being the sole example rated as Grade 10.
In a heartfelt farewell posted on Instagram before the auction, Paul expressed his sentiments about the card, stating, “Goodbye my friend. What a privilege it’s been to be the owner of the greatest collectible in the world.” His passion for collectibles, including NFTs and other rare items, has cemented his reputation as a significant player in the world of high-value collectibles.
The successful auction not only underscores the growing interest in Pokémon cards but also highlights the evolving landscape of trading collectibles, where values can soar to unprecedented levels.
