A significant winter storm is approaching eastern Newfoundland, set to impact the region from the evening of January 16, 2024, through to the night of January 17, 2024. The storm is expected to bring between 15 to 25 centimetres of snow across various areas, including the Avalon Peninsula, Bonavista Bay, Trinity Bay, and Placentia Bay, extending to locations as far west as Gambo, Hare Bay, and St. Brendan’s.

According to Environment Canada, residents should prepare for challenging weather conditions, as strong winds will accompany the snowfall. Coastal areas may experience gusts reaching up to 100 km/h, while northwesterly winds are projected to gust between 60 and 80 km/h across the region. In anticipation of these conditions, special weather statements have been issued for much of eastern Newfoundland.

The expected snowfall is characterized as “wet and heavy,” with temperatures hovering near the freezing mark. This combination of factors is likely to lead to hazardous travel conditions. Environment Canada urges individuals planning to travel during this period to reconsider their plans, noting that roads may become slippery and difficult to navigate due to snow accumulation.

As the storm approaches, local authorities and residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions. The anticipated weather event highlights the importance of preparedness during winter months, especially in regions prone to severe weather episodes.

For ongoing updates and alerts regarding this winter storm, residents can follow local news outlets or download relevant weather applications.
