Edmonton’s Beloved Evolution Wonderlounge Closes, New Era Begins
Edmonton’s iconic LGBTQ2S+ nightclub, Evolution Wonderlounge, is set to close its doors on Saturday night after a decade of providing a welcoming space for the community. The venue, located on 103 Street, has been a staple since its opening in 2013. However, this closure marks not just an ending but a transition as the owners shift their focus to their newer establishment, Evo, located on Jasper Avenue, which opened in April 2023.
Celebrating a Legacy
The emotional farewell is expected to draw a significant crowd as patrons gather to commemorate the bar’s legacy. Co-owner Rob Browatzke expressed mixed feelings about the closure, stating, “It’s emotional. It’s the end of an era. But every era, when it ends, it’s just the beginning of a new one.” He acknowledged the deep connection many have with the original location, recalling how it served as a first safe space for many in the LGBTQ2S+ community.
“For a lot of people, this is their first gay bar. This is the first space where they came and felt accepted and not a minority,” Browatzke added, highlighting the bar’s significance in fostering inclusivity.
A New Chapter at Evo
The new location at 11580 Jasper Ave aims to continue the tradition of celebration and community. Open seven days a week from 4 p.m., Evo offers a more open and sunlit atmosphere, with a full kitchen and a TouchTunes jukebox that allows patrons to curate their music selections during the week. The weekends at Evo promise to revive the vibrant nightlife experience that regulars cherish, featuring dancing and nightlife elements reminiscent of the original Wonderlounge.
As patrons prepare for the final night at Evolution Wonderlounge, Browatzke hopes to hear stories from guests about their experiences over the past twelve years. “My goal is to just let myself believe it when people come up to me and tell me what the space and staff have meant to them,” he noted.
With the legacy of Evolution Wonderlounge coming to a close, the community looks forward to the new offerings at Evo, marking the continuation of a treasured tradition in Edmonton’s LGBTQ2S+ scene.
