Winnipeg Braces for Deep Freeze with Hope for February Thaw
Winnipeg is currently experiencing a significant cold spell, with temperatures expected to remain below normal for the rest of January. According to senior climatologist Dave Phillips from Environment and Climate Change Canada, the city is likely to face its coldest weather since December 19, 2023, with temperatures dipping below –30 C later this week. Despite the harsh conditions, Phillips remains optimistic about a potential warm-up in February.
The city began the year with slushy streets and an unusually mild start to January, following a record-setting warm fall in Manitoba. However, as of now, the average daytime high for this time of year is around –13 C, indicating that residents should prepare for a period of extreme cold. Phillips emphasized that the next ten days will be particularly severe, stating, “That certainly will be the coldest moment of the entire winter.”
Cold Weather and Its Causes
Phillips attributes the drastic temperature fluctuations to the warming Arctic, which affects the behavior of jet streams. He explained, “Jet streams are acting like a skipping rope,” alternating between pulling cold air from the north and warm air from the south. This erratic weather pattern has led to the current deep freeze, which is expected to last until early February.
In light of the severe weather, outreach organizations in Winnipeg are mobilizing to assist homeless individuals during this extreme cold. These groups are on high alert, working to provide warmth and shelter to those in need as temperatures plummet.
Despite the challenges posed by the cold snap, Phillips noted that forecasts for February suggest a return to warmer-than-normal conditions. “The maps for February show warmer than normal, so I see some light at the end of the tunnel,” he said. This potential change could offer relief after a particularly harsh January.
As Manitobans prepare for what may also be a snowier winter, the focus now shifts to how residents will cope with the immediate cold. With the combination of plummeting temperatures and snow, the coming weeks will test the resilience of the city and its inhabitants.
