Jonathan Toews received a heartfelt welcome from Chicago fans as he returned to the United Center on October 30, 2023, for a game against the Chicago Blackhawks. The former Blackhawks captain, now playing for the Winnipeg Jets, was greeted with a standing ovation that lasted over four minutes. Toews, visibly moved, laughed and shook his head in disbelief as the cheers and chants of “Jonny! Jonny!” filled the arena.

During a timeout in the first period, Toews took a moment to acknowledge the crowd. “I tried to do my best to take it all in and really savor it,” he said. “Obviously, I spent some special years here in Chicago, and that’s what made playing for the Blackhawks so great.” He emphasized the significance of his time in Chicago, stating, “It will always be home and has a special place in my heart.”

A Fond Reunion with Fans

The atmosphere was electric as Toews and the Jets took the ice for pregame warmups. A loud cheer erupted when he was introduced with the starting lineup, and the crowd responded enthusiastically when he appeared on the videoboard during the Canadian national anthem. The Blackhawks honored Toews with a highlight video that featured memorable moments from his career in Chicago. The tribute prompted a standing ovation from the crowd of 19,894, many of whom donned No. 19 jerseys and held signs reading “Welcome back 19.”

Toews relished the moment, saying, “It felt like forever. I’m not sure what to do after a while in that situation.” Following the tribute, he took another lap around the ice, encouraged by his teammates.

Despite the emotional return, the Jets faced a tough game, losing 2-0 to the Blackhawks. Toews reflected on the mixed feelings of the evening, noting, “Pretty special.”

Toews’ Legacy in Chicago

Jonathan Toews was drafted by the Blackhawks with the third overall pick in the 2006 NHL Draft. He quickly became a central figure in the franchise’s resurgence, leading the team to three Stanley Cup victories in 2010, 2013, and 2015. He served as the 34th captain of the Blackhawks, taking on the role at just 20 years old in July 2008.

Toews was part of a dynamic group of players that transformed the Blackhawks into a championship-caliber team. “We had so many great players that were finding themselves and finding their careers at the same time,” Toews explained. The Blackhawks recently celebrated their centennial season, and Toews caught up with former teammates during the festivities.

Although he earned a reputation as “Captain Serious,” Toews has revealed more of his personality in recent years. He faced significant challenges during the 2020-21 season and part of the 2022-23 season due to long COVID-19 and chronic immune response syndrome, which sidelined him from play. The Blackhawks announced his departure from the team before the 2023 season finale, where he received an emotional send-off from fans during a 5-4 loss against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Blackhawks defenseman Connor Murphy spoke about the impact Toews has had on fans, saying, “He’s the one teammate I’ve ever had where you go out with him in public, and people won’t just say they’re a ‘big fan.’ They’ll almost give an emotional thank you to him.”

Now with the Jets, Toews has adjusted to his new role and has made a significant impact early in the season. He previously faced the Blackhawks in Winnipeg, where he garnered an assist in a 6-3 victory. Recently, Toews had scored in four consecutive games before being held scoreless in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

As Toews continues to find his footing with the Jets, his return to Chicago serves as a reminder of his lasting legacy in the city and the strong bond he shares with its fans. “I think as time went along I’ve been able to feel more comfortable and just find my game and settle in,” he noted.
