Traffic Control Company Fined Nearly $50K for Safety Violations

A traffic control company based in Surrey has been fined nearly $50,000 for serious safety violations at a job site in West Kelowna. According to a report from WorkSafeBC, Lanesafe Traffic Control Ltd. was penalized $48,380.25 for repeated high-risk infractions that jeopardized the safety of workers and the public.
On July 29, 2025, inspectors from WorkSafeBC issued a stop-work order after observing four employees conducting traffic control activities without adequate safety measures in place. During this time, utility services were performing a pole set transfer. The lack of barriers or automated flagging assistant devices was particularly concerning, as these are critical for ensuring safe traffic management.
WorkSafeBC’s investigation revealed that the company did not position traffic control personnel in locations deemed safe according to their risk assessment. Instead, employees were found in the travelled portion of the roadway, creating a hazardous environment for both workers and passing vehicles.
In a statement, WorkSafeBC emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols. “The firm failed to ensure traffic control persons were in a position that had been identified in the risk assessment as a safe location,” the agency noted.
This penalty adds to the growing list of safety concerns within the traffic control industry, raising questions about compliance and accountability. Currently, there is no review or appeal status regarding the WorkSafeBC case file for Lanesafe Traffic Control Ltd.
As companies in this sector are scrutinized for safety practices, it becomes increasingly crucial for all organizations to prioritize worker safety and public welfare to avoid similar repercussions in the future.
