The 77th annual CTV Lions Children’s Christmas Telethon successfully raised over $357,000 for local children in need during a live broadcast from Sudbury’s Place des Arts on December 9, 2023. This event, a longstanding tradition in the northern Ontario region, aims to ensure that thousands of local children receive gifts to unwrap on Christmas morning.

Over the years, the telethon has adapted to changing times, technological advancements, and even challenges posed by the pandemic. Despite these changes, its core mission of fostering holiday spirit and community support remains unchanged. The telethon this year marked a significant development, as it was live-streamed on Crave, expanding its reach to both Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie.

Community Impact and Support

Telethon chair Sam Khoury highlighted the extensive geographical area served by the fundraiser, which includes Sault Ste. Marie, Elliot Lake, Manitoulin Island, Onaping Falls, and surrounding regions. “Our area covers a vast region,” Khoury stated in an interview. “This year, we have already received over 15,000 requests for toys, and every donation goes directly to children and families across northeastern Ontario.”

The success of the telethon is largely attributed to community involvement, as both corporate sponsors and dedicated volunteers play pivotal roles in its execution. During the broadcast, Khoury acknowledged the contributions of local businesses and volunteers, emphasizing that the event could not succeed without their support. He expressed gratitude to sponsors such as Tim Hortons, Glencore, and Vale, and praised the broadcasting team for their efforts.

Celebration and Future Needs

As the event concluded, Khoury announced the impressive total raised, exceeding the initial goal of $325,000. “Thank you, Sudbury. Your support makes a significant difference, and we appreciate everyone who called in and contributed,” he said. He also called for continued community assistance in distributing the toys, highlighting the need for volunteers to help deliver gifts in Sudbury.

Throughout the nine-hour telethon, donations were accepted via phone and online, with many supporters also presenting cash and cheque contributions at the venue. Following the event, donations will continue to be accepted year-round, with drop-off points at locations such as the All Nations Church in Sudbury.

The telethon’s rich history traces back to 1949, when members of the Sudbury chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartets began raising funds for the Salvation Army. Over the decades, the event evolved, becoming a television staple and a key part of the community’s Christmas celebrations. In its inaugural year under the Lions Club in 1973, the telethon raised $7,000, a figure that has grown substantially over the years.

Today, the telethon is seen as a vital initiative, reflecting the generosity and community spirit of the Greater Sudbury area. As it continues to adapt and thrive, the CTV Lions Children’s Christmas Telethon remains a beacon of hope and joy for children in need during the holiday season.
