Kelowna Rockets Suffer Defeat to Spokane Chiefs in Season Opener
The Kelowna Rockets faced a challenging start to their season, losing 8-2 against the Spokane Chiefs on September 19, 2025. The game, held at Prospera Place, showcased the defending WHL champions, who quickly established their dominance.
Spokane opened the scoring with four goals in the first period, featuring contributions from Sam Oremba, Tristen Buckley, Chase Harrington, and Coco Armstrong. This early offensive surge set the tone for the match, leaving the Rockets in a difficult position.
In the second period, the Rockets managed to find the net when Connor Pankratz scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Dawson Gerwing and Jaxon Kehrig. This moment of offense was short-lived, as Spokane quickly responded with a goal from Mathis Preston, extending their lead to 5-1.
Spokane maintained their momentum, with Armstrong scoring again at the 17:10 mark, bringing the score to 6-1. The Rockets’ Kalder Varga found the back of the net just 41 seconds later with assistance from Owen Folstrom and Levi Benson, but it was not enough to shift the game’s trajectory.
The third period saw further goals from Spokane, including another from Harrington, solidifying their commanding 8-2 victory. Both Jake Pilon and newly acquired Josh Banini shared goaltending duties for the Rockets, each conceding four goals. In contrast, Chiefs’ goaltender Carter Esler made 36 saves, showcasing a strong performance.
Looking ahead, the Rockets are set to return to action on September 26, 2025, when they face the new WHL franchise, the Penticton Vees, in their home opener. The game is scheduled to begin at 19:05 at the South Okanagan Events Centre, marking a historic moment for the league as it welcomes a new team.
As the Rockets regroup after this defeat, they will be eager to bounce back and build momentum in their upcoming matches.
