Loyalist College and Trent University Launch New Degree Pathway
Loyalist College and Trent University have established a new educational agreement designed to enhance post-secondary learning opportunities. This partnership creates a direct and accelerated diploma-to-degree pathway for graduates of Loyalist’s Business – Accounting Diploma. Eligible students will be able to receive 10.0 credits towards the 20.0-credit Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) degree at Trent, allowing them to enter directly into the upper years of their degree program.
This initiative aims to save time and reduce costs for students, enabling them to accelerate their academic and career aspirations within a typical four-year timeframe. For many learners, starting with a college diploma is a crucial first step. This agreement acknowledges the skills acquired at Loyalist and provides a clear pathway for students to transition to a university credential without needing to repeat coursework or lose academic momentum.
Supporting Student Mobility and Academic Growth
“Today’s students are looking for flexible, efficient pathways that allow them to build credentials over time,” said Mark Kirkpatrick, President and CEO of Loyalist College. He emphasized that transfer agreements are vital in supporting student mobility and access to further education. Many students begin their educational journey at college for practical reasons, and this partnership with Trent University offers a structured route from diploma to degree, ensuring a seamless academic experience.
Dr. Amanda Baskwill, Senior Vice-President, Academic at Loyalist College, highlighted the importance of this agreement in affirming the academic rigor of their Business – Accounting program. “Our graduates leave Loyalist career-ready. For those who wish to continue their studies, this pathway opens the door to advanced credentials and expanded leadership opportunities,” she stated.
Trent University has a long-standing commitment to providing diverse and interdisciplinary learning experiences. Dr. Mark Skinner, Provost and Vice-President, Academic at Trent University, noted that while some students have a clear career path, many may adjust their educational plans as they gain experience. “This new business pathway reflects the growing need for program variety and learning mobility,” he added.
Pathway Details and Future Prospects
The diploma-to-degree pathway will be available to graduates of Loyalist’s two-year Business – Accounting Diploma who commence their studies in Fall 2024 or later and achieve a minimum overall average of 75 percent. Students who started their studies before Fall 2024 will be assessed for transfer credit on a course-by-course basis.
Upon admission to Trent, transfer students will benefit from a comprehensive range of support services, including academic advising, skills development resources, career services, and accessibility supports. Additionally, transfer bursaries will be available to facilitate a smooth transition and ensure continued success in their studies.
This new agreement builds upon an established partnership between Loyalist and Trent that already includes various transfer opportunities across disciplines. Existing pathways support graduates from programs such as Biotechnology, Child and Youth Care, Community and Justice Services, Customs Border Services, Fitness and Health Promotion, Police Foundations, and Social Service Worker in pursuing related undergraduate studies.
Together, Loyalist College and Trent University are committed to creating flexible, student-centered pathways that strengthen Ontario’s post-secondary system, empowering graduates to transition confidently from classroom to career and beyond. This collaboration not only enhances educational opportunities but also aligns with the evolving needs of students and the workforce.
