Remembering Sylvia Carlstrom: A Life of Adventure and Passion
Sylvia Carlstrom, a beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, at Campbell River Hospital. Born on August 19, 1943, in Aberdeen, Washington, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Anna (Anderson) Fogde. Sylvia’s life was marked by adventure, love, and a deep connection to the outdoors.
In December 1964, she married Jared (Jay) Carlstrom, embarking on a journey that would take them from the United States to Canada. In 1971, they began their significant life adventure, moving to various locations across British Columbia, including Victoria and the lower mainland. Their love for the West Coast ultimately led them to settle in Campbell River in October 1980.
Celebrating an Active Lifestyle
Sylvia and Jay cherished their time together, embracing an outdoor lifestyle that included boating, fishing, and camping throughout Vancouver Island and other parts of British Columbia. Retirement brought new passions; they became avid tennis players and often wintered in southern California and Arizona.
Her friends will fondly remember Sylvia for her exceptional cooking skills and dedication to gardening. Her home was a reflection of her talents, featuring a beautiful yard and handmade cards that showcased her creativity. Her love for crafting wine further highlighted her vibrant personality.
Sylvia is survived by her husband, Jay, and their daughter, Cerese (Brad) Shadlock. She was predeceased by her son, Ty Spencer, in November 2024, a loss that deeply affected her family.
Acknowledging Compassionate Care
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Drs. Prinsloo and Dry, Nurse Practitioner Christie Simon, and the dedicated nurses and staff at Campbell River Hospital for their compassionate care during Sylvia’s final moments.
In accordance with her wishes, no formal service will be held. Sylvia Carlstrom’s legacy will live on through the memories she created and the lives she touched during her remarkable journey.
