Carter Hollis Leads Coal City to 2-1 Victory Over Herscher
In a closely contested match, Coal City secured a 2-1 victory against Herscher in the Illinois Central Eight Conference on October 5, 2023. This latest win adds to the intense rivalry among the top four teams in the conference, which includes Manteno and Peotone. Collectively, these teams have faced each other nine times this season, with a narrow margin of just seven goals separating them in those encounters.
Coal City, now boasting a record of 16-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play, took the lead thanks to a late goal from sophomore Carter Hollis. With just 12 minutes remaining in the match, Hollis found the back of the net, sealing the win after a previous loss to Peotone just two days earlier.
Match Highlights and Player Performances
The game began with a scoreless first half, where both teams struggled to break through defensively. It wasn’t until 25 minutes into the second half that Coal City struck first. Julian Micetich scored with a header from a corner kick delivered by Creed Macaluso. Shortly after, Luis Parra of Herscher equalized, driving through the defense to score. This was only the sixth goal allowed by Coal City in 19 games this season.
Coal City goalkeeper Carter Nicholson played a crucial role, making 10 saves throughout the match. His defensive line, comprised of experienced players, effectively contained Herscher’s offensive threats, particularly Parra. “I was telling the defense to just shadow their star player, just stay on his hip and push him to his opposite foot,” Nicholson explained. “They did a wonderful job.”
Head coach Steve McCleary emphasized the importance of experience within the team. With nearly all players returning from last season, the Coalers have developed a strong chemistry on the field. “Our back line has really gelled this year with Carter in the goal, and they have been absolutely phenomenal,” McCleary stated.
Looking Ahead in the Season
The Coalers will conclude their regular season on October 8 with a home game against Sandwich. Meanwhile, Herscher, now 13-4-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play, will travel to St. Anne for a nonconference fixture before facing Peotone at home on October 7.
Despite the setback against Coal City, Herscher head coach Hugo Hernandez expressed pride in his team’s performance. “It’s part of the sport that I fell in love with since I was a kid, that you can do everything right as a player or a coach and still come up short,” he said. “With the boys today, they showed me that, no matter the circumstance, they’re going to play for each other and fight for each other.”
Hernandez also noted that competitive matches like this one are excellent preparation for the upcoming postseason, highlighting the potential of both teams to advance far in the tournament. “On any given day in this conference, everybody has the ingredients to go all the way,” he remarked. “It just comes down to those one-goal margins, and we saw that today.”
