Man Charged After Extortion-Related Shooting in Surrey
A 21-year-old man has been charged following an extortion-related shooting incident that occurred on November 12, 2023, in South Surrey, British Columbia. Avtar Singh faces one charge of unlawfully discharging a firearm in connection with the shooting that took place in the 17000-block of 32 Avenue.
The incident occurred at approximately 19:35 local time, marking the second time in less than a week that the residence had been targeted. The same property was previously struck by gunfire on November 8, raising concerns in the community about escalating violence.
Singh was arrested on December 5, 2023, and is currently in custody. He is scheduled to appear in court on December 10, 2023, as the investigation continues. The British Columbia Royal Canadian Mounted Police (BC RCMP) have stated that the investigation remains “active and ongoing.”
Ongoing Investigation and Community Safety Concerns
According to a press release from the BC RCMP, Assistant Commissioner John Brewer commented on the situation, highlighting the efforts of the BC Extortion Task Force. “The team has been working diligently to advance investigations and secure charges,” Brewer stated. He emphasized the importance of the recent charge approval, noting it as a significant step forward in addressing violent crime associated with extortion.
“The proactive measures we are taking through evidence-based investigations and intelligence-led operations underline our commitment to pursuing those who commit violent acts and are involved in extortion,” Brewer added.
The incidents have heightened concerns among residents in South Surrey regarding safety and the potential for further violence. Local authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
As the investigation progresses, more details are anticipated from the authorities. Community members are encouraged to stay informed through official channels as further updates are provided.
