CRTC Initiates Study to Enhance Cellphone Coverage Reporting for Canadians
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has launched a new consultation aimed at improving the reporting of cellphone coverage gaps across Canada. The initiative seeks to empower consumers by developing a standardized method for reporting mobile network coverage, addressing ongoing concerns about service availability in various regions.
The CRTC’s move comes in response to public opinion research indicating that many Canadians feel there are significant areas where cellphone service is inadequate or completely unavailable. By creating a more uniform reporting system, the commission aims to assist service providers, government entities, and public safety organizations in identifying both strong coverage areas and locations that require improvement.
Public Feedback Encouraged Until March 16
Canadians are invited to participate in this consultation by submitting their feedback through various channels, including online comments, letters, or faxes, until March 16, 2026. This outreach is part of the CRTC’s broader initiative to enhance consumer control over their telecommunications services.
Last year, the CRTC implemented a ruling requiring service providers to notify the commission within two hours of experiencing a major network outage. This ruling was part of a series of measures aimed at improving the reliability of telecommunications services for Canadians.
In addition to addressing coverage gaps, the CRTC has launched further studies focused on how service providers can enhance network reliability and what protections should be in place for consumers during outages affecting internet, phone, or television services.
Empowering Consumers in Telecommunications
Recent consultations by the CRTC have centered on increasing consumer awareness and control over their internet and cellphone options. The commission is working to help Canadians better navigate their choices when selecting plans, thereby fostering a more competitive telecommunications environment.
This latest study aims to build on these efforts, ensuring that Canadians have access to accurate information regarding network coverage. By improving transparency in coverage data, the CRTC hopes to create a more informed public capable of making better decisions regarding their telecommunications needs.
This initiative reflects the CRTC’s commitment to enhancing the telecommunications landscape in Canada, ultimately benefiting consumers, service providers, and public safety organizations alike.
