Calgary Petting Farm Closes After Avian Influenza Detection

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has enforced a closure order for Butterfield Acres, a petting farm located in Calgary, following the detection of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Health officials were alerted to nine confirmed cases of HPAI at the facility on October 16, 2023. In response, Butterfield Acres voluntarily closed its doors from October 13 to October 17, after which AHS issued a formal closure order.
Public Health Advisory Issued
The closure will remain in effect until AHS determines that the facility can safely reopen. Officials indicated that while HPAI predominantly affects birds, there have been rare instances of human infections resulting from close contact with infected animals. AHS stated in a news release, “The risk to the public remains low.”
Despite this low risk, AHS advises individuals who visited Butterfield Acres between October 6 and October 12 to contact Health Link by calling 811 if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, or sore throat. Those who do not have symptoms are not required to call.
Understanding Avian Influenza Symptoms
Symptoms of avian influenza can vary significantly, ranging from mild to severe depending on the specific strain of the virus. According to AHS, the most common manifestations include respiratory issues and flu-like symptoms.
The health authority is closely monitoring the situation at Butterfield Acres and will provide updates as needed. Further guidelines and information regarding avian influenza can be accessed through AHS’s official channels.
The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any unusual health concerns following recent visits to the petting farm. AHS continues to prioritize public safety while managing the outbreak effectively.
