Severe Weather Delays Power Restoration for Zeballos Community
More than 200 customers in the Village of Zeballos and the Ehattesaht First Nation have been without power since January 7, 2026, due to severe weather conditions affecting repair efforts. The damaged power line is situated in a remote area that can only be accessed by helicopter, but unsafe flying conditions have hindered crews from reaching the site.
BC Hydro has been actively monitoring the situation. According to Ted Olynyk, the community relations regional manager for BC Hydro, crews and necessary materials are prepared for deployment as soon as weather conditions improve. “They’re good to go, but unfortunately we’re at the mercy of Mother Nature,” Olynyk stated in an interview with CHEK News.
Efforts to assess the damage have faced additional challenges. A ground patrol attempted to determine the cause of the outage, but their efforts were unsuccessful due to the difficult terrain and weather conditions. If conditions allow, a helicopter patrol is anticipated to take place soon to evaluate the situation and transport crews to the repair site.
The community remains hopeful for a resolution as updates on the restoration efforts will be provided as they become available. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local communications from BC Hydro.
This situation underscores the impact of weather on infrastructure and the essential services that communities rely upon. The priority remains on restoring power to the affected residents of Zeballos and the Ehattesaht First Nation as swiftly as possible.
