The federal government has announced a funding initiative of over $2.5 million for the District of Saanich, aimed at enhancing services for seniors in the region. This investment, totaling $2.53 million, will be distributed over a five-year period through the New Horizons for Seniors program.

The District of Saanich plans to collaborate with various municipalities and non-profit organizations to effectively utilize this funding. Notable community partners in this initiative include the Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society, Silver Threads Services, Saanich Neighbourhood Place, and the Greater Victoria Volunteer Society. Other collaborators are the Vancouver Island Counselling Centre for Immigrants and Refugees and the Métis Nation of Greater Victoria in conjunction with the Victoria Native Friendship Centre.

Addressing Senior Isolation and Service Gaps

Local government entities, including the Capital Regional District, the City of Victoria, and West Shore Parks and Recreation, are working on projects to alleviate gaps in current services. These initiatives will target essential areas such as transportation, organized events, and drop-in activities.

Saanich Mayor Dean Murdock emphasized the importance of this funding in a recent statement, noting that isolation is a significant concern for seniors. He highlighted that many seniors face challenges, including language barriers and limited familiarity with available resources. “This funding will go a long way towards ensuring all members of our community can participate in activities, improve their social connections, and feel like they belong in Saanich,” Murdock stated.

The investment is expected to foster a more inclusive environment for seniors, providing them with better access to essential services and opportunities for social interaction. By focusing on collaboration with community partners, Saanich aims to create a supportive network that addresses the unique needs of its senior population.

As the program unfolds, the District of Saanich looks forward to implementing these initiatives, enhancing the quality of life for seniors and ensuring their active participation in community life.
