Pentagon Expands Missile Program; Artemis II Set for April Launch
The Pentagon has announced a significant increase in missile production, while NASA prepares for its upcoming Artemis II mission, scheduled to launch on April 1, 2024. This dual focus highlights the shifting dynamics in both defense and space exploration at a time of heightened global tensions.
Pentagon Ups Missile Production Amid Rising Threats
In early February, the Pentagon, in partnership with RTX, formerly known as Raytheon, reached an agreement to ramp up the production of various missile systems. This includes Tomahawk cruise missiles, air-to-air missiles, and SM-3 and SM-6 interceptors. The latest announcement detailed an order for 23 additional SM-3 missiles, bringing the total to 78, with a cumulative cost exceeding $1.36 billion.
The urgency behind these orders stems from recent military operations in the Middle East, particularly in response to threats from Iranian missiles and drones targeting US and allied bases. Lockheed Martin is also expanding production of THAAD interceptors to 400 units annually and boosting the output of Patriot PAC-3 missiles to 2,000 each year, as reported by Reuters.
NASA’s Artemis II Mission Gears Up for Launch
NASA is set to roll out its Artemis II Moon rocket next week, aiming for a historic launch on April 1, 2024, at 18:24 EDT (22:24 UTC). This mission will send four astronauts on a nine-day journey around the Moon. Following a two-day flight readiness review, NASA officials expressed confidence in proceeding with the launch, despite earlier delays caused by hydrogen fuel leaks and issues with the rocket’s upper-stage propellant pressurization system.
Lori Glaze, associate administrator of Exploration Systems Development at NASA Headquarters, confirmed, “All the teams polled ‘go’ to launch,” while cautioning that the mission remains a test flight and carries inherent risks.
The Artemis II mission is critical for NASA’s broader goal of returning humans to the Moon, with a specific launch window that ends on April 6, 2024. If the mission does not launch by then, it could face further delays.
In related developments, NASA has decided to discontinue the Exploration Upper Stage program, opting instead for a more cost-effective solution from United Launch Alliance for future Artemis missions. This decision reflects a shift towards utilizing commercially developed technologies in space exploration.
Successful Rocket Launches: Firefly and Rocket Lab
Firefly Aerospace successfully launched its Alpha rocket on March 11, 2024, marking a return to flight after a previous launch failure. The mission, a technology demonstration, lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, reaching orbit approximately eight minutes later. This flight is part of preparations for the upcoming Block II version of the Alpha rocket, which will feature several upgrades, including enhanced thermal protection systems and improved avionics.
Meanwhile, Rocket Lab launched a satellite for a confidential customer on March 5, 2024, likely Earth observation firm BlackSky. The Electron rocket delivered the payload to an orbit of approximately 292 miles (470 kilometers). This mission continues Rocket Lab’s trend of supporting undisclosed customers, with BlackSky previously confirming partnerships under similar circumstances.
China Resumes Launch Activity
On March 12, 2024, China resumed its orbital launch activities after a month-long hiatus, coinciding with the Chinese New Year. The first of two launches involved a Long March 8A rocket carrying Internet satellites, followed by a Long March 2D rocket deploying military satellites. This resumption indicates China’s ongoing commitment to expanding its satellite networks for data relay and surveillance.
As the global landscape evolves, both military and space exploration sectors are responding to new challenges and opportunities. The Pentagon’s increased missile production underscores the pressures of contemporary security concerns, while NASA’s Artemis II mission aims to push the boundaries of human space exploration.
