AI Tool OpenClaw Sparks ‘Lobster Fever’ in China Despite Risks
Chinese entrepreneur Frank Gao has transformed the way he manages his social media presence, outsourcing the task to an AI tool called OpenClaw. This innovative application is gaining immense popularity across China, enticing users with its ability to perform real-life tasks—including sending emails, organizing files, and booking flights—despite ongoing concerns regarding cybersecurity risks.
OpenClaw, which was created in November 2022 by Austrian programmer Peter Steinberger, differentiates itself from other AI bots, such as ChatGPT, by executing tangible tasks rather than merely generating text. Gao expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Since January, I’ve spent hours on the lobster every day. We’re family,” referring to OpenClaw’s red lobster mascot. Users of the tool can connect it with existing AI models of their choice and provide simple instructions via instant messaging, making it feel like interacting with a colleague or friend.
Growing Adoption Amid Security Concerns
The rise of OpenClaw has captivated tech enthusiasts globally, particularly in China, where tech-savvy individuals and companies are eager to adopt the latest advancements. Recently, hundreds of people queued at Baidu‘s headquarters in Beijing for an OpenClaw event, where engineers assisted attendees in setting up their own “little lobsters.” Similar gatherings have occurred across major cities, including Shanghai and Shenzhen, with some municipalities, like Wuxi and Hangzhou, committing substantial financial resources to encourage the tool’s development and adoption.
Despite its popularity, this newfound “lobster fever” has raised alarms about potential security vulnerabilities. Gao cautioned, “What’s truly scary about agents like OpenClaw is this: once they have your digital keys, they can theoretically access all the services you’ve authorised.” This concern was echoed by national cybersecurity authorities, who urged caution in using such intelligent agents. Expert Wei Liang from a national IT research institute advised government agencies and individuals to “use intelligent agents such as ‘lobster’ with caution.”
The Competitive Landscape and Market Dynamics
The mixed signals from authorities—encouraging innovation while simultaneously warning of risks—highlight a cautious approach towards the excitement surrounding AI tools in China. As interest in OpenClaw surges, major tech companies, including Tencent, Alibaba, and ByteDance, are offering simplified installation processes and affordable coding plans for users who prefer hosting OpenClaw agents on cloud servers, perceived as a safer option compared to personal computer installations.
The competition has intensified, with various companies introducing their own AI agent tools, such as ByteDance’s ArkClaw and Tencent’s WorkBuddy. According to Gao Rui, a senior product manager at Baidu AI Cloud, the low cost of deploying OpenClaw in China is a significant factor in its adoption. “For most people, it’s likely just the price of a cup of coffee… which is why people will probably be keen to give it a try,” she noted.
The phenomenon is also fueled by a prevalent fear of missing out (FOMO). AI developer Chen Yunfei, who created a popular online guide for OpenClaw, observed that many Chinese individuals are inclined to explore new technologies, driven by a forward-looking mindset. Xie Manrui, a programmer working on a visualization system for managing OpenClaw agents, remarked that the tool has arrived “at the right moment” to reshape perceptions of AI in China, moving beyond the idea of AI as merely a conversational chatbot.
At the recent Baidu event, young attendees like Zheng Huimin, a 24-year-old college student, expressed enthusiasm about the possibilities OpenClaw offers. “I’d like to give it a go to see what tasks it can actually help me accomplish,” she shared, reflecting the curiosity that continues to drive interest in this innovative AI tool.
As OpenClaw garners attention and use expands, it presents a captivating case of technological adoption amid caution, highlighting the delicate balance between innovation and security in the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
