Lethbridge Polytechnic Achieves Top 10 Status in Canadian Research Rankings
Lethbridge Polytechnic has secured a notable position in Canada’s higher education landscape, ranking ninth among the country’s top research colleges, according to a report released by Research Infosource. This ranking marks an improvement from its previous position of tenth last year and eleventh in 2023.
The institution’s journey into applied research began in 1999 with the establishment of the Aquaculture Centre of Excellence. Over the years, the Centre of Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship has expanded its focus to include five key themes: agriculture, food and environment, business and technology, health and wellness, and justice and public safety.
Recognition of Research Excellence
Kenny Corscadden, the vice-president of academic and research at Lethbridge Polytechnic, expressed pride in the institution’s recognition. “Being recognized for our applied research, when compared with so many other institutions across Canada, is a remarkable win for the polytechnic,” he stated in a press release issued on Thursday. He highlighted that Lethbridge Polytechnic has consistently demonstrated its capacity to compete at the national level over the past three years.
Corscadden emphasized the importance of providing students and researchers with applied learning and research opportunities across a growing number of sectors. “Lethbridge Polytechnic is becoming an institution of choice for those interested in making a difference and taking their education and research to the next level,” he added.
Andrew Dunlop, associate vice-president of research, also commented on the institution’s evolution. “The heart of applied research is responsiveness to industry and community needs,” he noted. Dunlop pointed out that Lethbridge Polytechnic has actively diversified its research capabilities and developed strong relationships with stakeholders to address various challenges faced by communities and industries.
A Shift in Institutional Identity
In his remarks, Dunlop highlighted the transition of Lethbridge College to a polytechnic institution, stating that the new brand aims to redefine its role in the educational landscape. “To get people used to the idea that it is a different kind of institution now,” he explained. “We serve a different mandate, and applied research is part of that.”
He underscored that the high ranking enhances confidence among stakeholders and demonstrates the institution’s expertise in applied research. This recognition not only elevates Lethbridge Polytechnic’s profile but also underscores its commitment to addressing real-world problems through collaborative research efforts.
As Lethbridge Polytechnic continues to strengthen its research initiatives, the institution looks poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of applied research in Canada. The continued support from industry partners and community stakeholders will be crucial as the polytechnic advances its mission to provide innovative solutions and educational opportunities.
