Lethbridge Polytechnic Achieves Top 10 Status in Canadian Research Colleges
Lethbridge Polytechnic has been ranked as the ninth-best research college in Canada, according to a recent report by Research Infosource. This marks an improvement from its previous position of tenth last year and eleventh in 2023. The institution’s commitment to applied research began with the establishment of the Aquaculture Centre of Excellence in 1999 and has since evolved significantly.
The Centre of Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship has broadened its research efforts to include five key areas: agriculture, food and environment, business and technology, health and wellness, and justice and public safety. This expansion reflects Lethbridge Polytechnic’s dedication to addressing diverse challenges faced by various sectors.
“Being recognized for our applied research, when compared with so many other institutions across Canada, is a remarkable win for the polytechnic,” stated Kenny Corscadden, vice-president of academic and research at Lethbridge Polytechnic. He emphasized that this ranking highlights the institution’s ability to compete at a national level consistently over the past three years.
The focus on applied learning and research opportunities is aimed at equipping students and researchers with the necessary tools to effect meaningful change in their communities. Corscadden noted, “Lethbridge Polytechnic is becoming an institution of choice for those interested in making a difference and taking their education and research to the next level.”
Andrew Dunlop, associate vice-president of research, highlighted the importance of responsiveness to industry and community needs. “Lethbridge Polytechnic has worked to diversify our research capabilities, develop relationships with stakeholders, and leverage the strengths of our researchers to solve challenges and problems,” he remarked.
In a conversation with the media, Dunlop discussed the institution’s transition from Lethbridge College to a polytechnic. He explained that this new identity comes with a different mandate, which includes a heightened focus on applied research. “To have that high ranking just gives people confidence that they’re working with an institution where they know what they’re doing in this area,” Dunlop added.
The recognition by Research Infosource underscores Lethbridge Polytechnic’s commitment to excellence in research and its role in fostering innovation across various fields. As the institution continues to enhance its research capabilities, it aims to solidify its position as a leader in applied research in Canada.
