The Lucky Seven Cattle Company in central Alberta celebrated an extraordinary start to the year as triplet calves were born for the second consecutive New Year’s Day. The remarkable event unfolded on January 1, 2023, when a purebred Red Angus cow entered labor around 3 a.m. By 4 a.m., she had delivered her first calf unassisted.

Owner Stacey Stimpson described the moment as a mix of excitement and concern. After the first calf was born, she realized the mother still had more to give. “Sure enough, I palpate this cow, and yep, there’s another set of feet and a head right there,” Stimpson recounted in an interview. Following her father’s advice not to put the chains away too soon, she persisted and discovered a third calf was also on the way.

The third calf presented a challenge as it was in a backwards position, increasing the risk of suffocation. Stimpson acted quickly, successfully delivering the final calf, which was named Darla, joining her sisters Marla and Carla. “Triplets are a rarity in any breed. To get them all alive is like, ‘Holy cow,’” Stimpson remarked, reflecting on their fortune.

Rarity of Triplet Births

The birth of triplets is an uncommon occurrence in cattle, making this event particularly noteworthy. Last year, the same ranch experienced a similar miracle when the triplets’ grandmother also gave birth to triplets. “Something in the water? I don’t know,” Stimpson joked.

The health of both the calves and their mother is a priority, and they are being closely monitored. While Marla remains with her mother, Carla and Darla are being cared for by a nurse cow to alleviate some of the stress on their mother. The weights of the newborns ranged between 51 and 56 pounds, indicating a healthy start to their lives.

This extraordinary event not only highlights the resilience of livestock but also the dedication of ranchers like Stimpson, who work tirelessly to ensure the wellbeing of their animals. The Lucky Seven Cattle Company continues to be a focal point of agricultural success in Alberta, showcasing the marvels of animal husbandry.

As the year unfolds, the ranch will undoubtedly remain a place of interest for those fascinated by the wonders of nature and farming.
