The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre has commenced its largest annual initiative, the Foodbank Light It Up campaign, with a significant contribution from local union representatives. On Giving Tuesday, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 649 announced a donation of 10,000 CAD to assist families facing food insecurity in the region.

Brant Palko, president of UFCW Local 649, highlighted the importance of community support in addressing growing financial challenges. “We’re happy to donate 10,000 CAD on behalf of our members to the Saskatoon Foodbank today,” he stated. The funds were raised by UFCW members across Saskatchewan, showcasing the union’s commitment to solidarity beyond the workplace.

As the cost of living continues to rise, many individuals who work full-time jobs find themselves relying on food banks. Pat Horbay, president of UFCW Local 248P, emphasized that even those with stable employment are struggling. “Our members that we represent here in Saskatoon, Prince Albert and Regina, they have full-time jobs, and some are using the food bank,” he noted.

Rising Demand for Food Bank Services

At the Saskatoon Food Bank, the demand for assistance grows each month. Executive Director Laurie O’Connor underscored the significance of the holiday campaign, stating, “Despite everyone feeling the crunch, for the cost of living, we’re seeing folks come out in droves to already support us in this campaign.”

The 10,000 CAD donation will greatly benefit the food bank’s operations, providing resources to meet the needs of the community. O’Connor explained, “To put it in perspective, it will cover 7,000 1-litre containers of milk.” Currently, the food bank serves over 23,000 people each month and distributes approximately 8,500 hampers, placing a considerable strain on their resources.

The food bank is particularly focused on collecting nutritious food items, as 40 percent of their requests come from children. Essential items such as baby formula and baby food remain in high demand.

On this day dedicated to giving back, the donation from UFCW serves as a vital reminder that community support is crucial for keeping the food bank’s doors open and shelves stocked. The annual Foodbank Light It Up campaign not only raises awareness about food insecurity but also encourages individuals to contribute to their local community during the holiday season.
