Northern Illinois University Falls Short in 20-9 Defeat at Maryland
Northern Illinois University (NIU) faced a challenging matchup against the University of Maryland on September 15, 2023, resulting in a 20-9 loss. Despite the defeat, NIU’s head coach, Thomas Hammock, expressed pride in his team’s performance against a formidable Big Ten opponent.
Huskies Compete Strongly Against Terps
The Terrapins, coming off a decisive 39-7 victory over Florida Atlantic University, entered the game with confidence. Hammock highlighted the resilience of his players, stating, “I’m proud of the way they competed for four quarters against a Big Ten opponent with a lot more resources.” The Huskies demonstrated their ability to adapt by capitalizing on Maryland’s vulnerabilities, achieving a notable 74-yard touchdown run by running back Telly Johnson Jr..
Following the game, Johnson Jr. emphasized the team’s preparation, saying, “We’ve really just been going through the game plan all week.” His teammate, linebacker Filip Maciorowski, shared similar sentiments, pointing out that successful execution of their strategy led to significant plays. “There’s always going to be some plays we want back, but that’s football,” said Maciorowski. “So, we’re going to practice more and get it fixed.”
Areas for Improvement and Upcoming Challenges
As the Huskies enter a bye week, Hammock is optimistic about the potential for improvement. He noted the need for a stronger running game, stating, “Telly had a nice explosive play, but we need more from our running game, to be honest with you.” He acknowledged the toughness of Maryland’s defensive front and emphasized the urgency to enhance their performance quickly.
NIU struggled to score in the first half, managing only a field goal before regrouping in the second half. A critical fumble recovery allowed them to shift momentum, as Hammock remarked, “That was a huge play, because now, you took points off the board.” Although the Huskies outperformed Maryland in rushing yards with a total of 93 more yards, Hammock stressed the importance of converting opportunities into touchdowns rather than settling for field goals.
Running back Chavon Wright, a redshirt senior known for his impressive records in Division II football, showcased his talent during the game. Wright is determined to surpass his own record of 2,233 rushing yards and 38 touchdowns in the upcoming 2025 season. Following a narrow victory over Holy Cross, NIU now prepares to face the Mississippi State Bulldogs on September 20, 2023, in what is expected to be their toughest challenge yet this season.
Despite the loss, Hammock remains focused on the positives, stating, “We can build from that, because the rest of the season, I don’t know how many teams on our schedule are going to be as good as [Maryland].” Overall, the performance against Maryland serves as a stepping stone for the Huskies as they aim to refine their skills and strategy in the weeks ahead.
