Join the Wag-A-Tail Walk-A-Thon for Pets in Need This Sunday
The Brandon Humane Society is inviting animal lovers to participate in its annual Wag-A-Tail Walk-A-Thon on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at Kin Park in Brandon. This signature fundraising event runs from 10 a.m. to noon and aims to raise funds to support the shelter’s operational costs while promoting pet adoption and community engagement.
Participants can choose between two walking routes—one measuring two kilometres and a shorter alternative. While dog owners are encouraged to bring their pets, those without dogs are still welcome to attend and interact with various breeds showcased by other attendees. According to Tracy Munn, shelter manager, “It’s a walkathon, but if you can’t bring your dog or maybe you don’t even have one, just come and visit and see all the different kinds of dogs people have.”
The event begins with registration and includes complimentary breakfast sandwiches from Wendy’s, coffee, and Timbits provided by Tim Hortons. At the conclusion of the walk, a free barbecue will be held for participants, fostering a sense of community among animal enthusiasts. Munn emphasizes that the event is not just about fundraising; it is an opportunity to meet like-minded individuals and potentially become a volunteer.
The shelter expects to have at least 20 dogs available for adoption during the walkathon. Although cats will not be present at the event, over 30 felines are currently housed at the shelter, all of which have received necessary vaccinations and are ready for their future homes. Munn notes the unique benefits of adopting shelter animals, stating, “Shelter dogs make especially great pets because they have been socialized and trained by staff and volunteers, often from puppyhood.”
This year marks the 22nd annual Wag-A-Tail Walk-A-Thon, which typically raises between $38,000 and $42,000. These funds come from pledges made by walkers. Munn hopes to reach a target of $50,000 for future events to cover escalating operational costs. Last year, the shelter incurred a veterinary bill of $75,000 and $25,000 in water and sewage expenses, highlighting the financial challenges faced by the organization.
“Our operating costs exceed $300,000 annually, and we have very minimal staff,” Munn explains. The shelter relies heavily on its dedicated volunteers, who are essential to its daily operations. “We need people who can give medication—those things are very important,” she adds.
The Brandon Humane Society operates as a no-kill shelter, providing a temporary home for approximately 85 dogs and cats. Registered veterinary technician Sheila Lobreau from the Brandon Hills Veterinary Clinic, a sponsor of the walkathon, commended the shelter’s efforts, stating, “They’ve been part of the Brandon Hills vet clinic for many, many years, and we give them breaks on quite a few things.” Lobreau noted that many pets from the shelter arrive in excellent condition, showcasing the care they receive.
Munn shared her passion for animal welfare, saying, “I love animals. They are a gift and give so much back.” She highlighted the positive impact animals have on individuals facing mental health challenges, including veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. “Dogs and cats have been the best medicine. They give so much, and they ask for nothing back,” Munn added.
On the day of the event, six players from the Brandon Wheat Kings will be present to assist with the barbecue and available for photographs and autographs, adding an extra layer of excitement for attendees.
For those interested in supporting the Brandon Humane Society, participating in the Wag-A-Tail Walk-A-Thon offers a chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of animals in need. Additional information can be obtained by contacting the shelter at 204-728-1331.
