Montreal Police Heighten Security Following Mass Shooting in Australia
Montreal police announced they will enhance their security measures in areas where Jewish community celebrations are occurring, in response to a tragic mass shooting at a Hanukkah event in Australia. On December 10, 2023, two gunmen attacked the gathering at Bondi Beach in Sydney, resulting in the deaths of 15 individuals and leaving at least 38 injured. Australian authorities classified the incident as a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community.
In a written statement, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) expressed its commitment to ensuring safety during the remaining days of Hanukkah. The police emphasized their ongoing communication with leaders of Montreal’s Jewish community, acknowledging their concerns. “We are currently reviewing our position on the ground,” the SPVM stated, reaffirming their dedication to protecting all residents.
Montreal’s Mayor, Soraya Martinez Ferrada, also shared her thoughts on social media, expressing her sorrow over the attack. “The assault on a Jewish community in Australia breaks my heart,” she wrote. The mayor noted that the joyous occasion of Hanukkah had been marred by violence and anti-Semitism. She confirmed her discussions with SPVM Chief Fady Dagher to ensure increased vigilance within Montreal’s Jewish neighborhoods.
Quebec Liberal MP Anthony Housefather, a longtime advocate against antisemitism, voiced his distress following the attack. In an interview with CBC News Network, Housefather stated that the rising tide of antisemitic incidents calls for a reevaluation of hate laws and increased funding for security measures. “Every Jewish Canadian feels distraught today, and I hope all Canadians feel the same in solidarity with our Jewish communities and the people of Australia,” he remarked.
Housefather encouraged Canadians to participate in Hanukkah events, asserting that Jews should not be discouraged from practicing their faith publicly. He emphasized the importance of community support during difficult times.
In a statement from the city of Côte Saint-Luc, which has a significant Jewish population, officials expressed their grief for the victims and their families. “If peace-loving Canadians cannot safely hold community events, then something fundamental has been lost in our free societies,” the statement read. The city pledged to take all necessary actions to ensure the safety of its residents and community institutions.
As Montreal increases its security presence during this sensitive time, the city stands in solidarity with the Jewish community, reaffirming a collective commitment to safety and support. The tragic events in Australia serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by hate and violence, underscoring the need for vigilance and community cohesion.
