A volunteer organization in Winnipeg braved temperatures that felt like -27°C to provide essential support to unsheltered and vulnerable community members. On December 10, 2023, Urban Wagons conducted its annual holiday walk through downtown Winnipeg, delivering hot meals, winter clothing, care packages, and much-needed social interaction.

Lisa Morantz, the director of operations for Urban Wagons, highlighted the challenges faced by those without shelter. She noted that many individuals reported being unable to access shelters due to them being fully booked. “They’ve shown us the spots that they sleep on. So in this weather, it’s almost impossible for them to obtain blankets and hats and gloves to be able to get through the night,” Morantz stated.

As volunteers prepared for their walk, several community members approached them, eager to receive care packages. Morantz described the experience as both purposeful and disheartening. “It’s purposeful in one way, but the other way we feel that… we should be able to do better for people who are challenged by shelter,” she said. She expressed sadness at witnessing individuals in need, stating, “We see the frostbite on their fingers.”

Concerns Over New Encampment Rules

With the introduction of new encampment regulations in Winnipeg, Morantz expressed growing concerns from community members. Many individuals who previously slept in encampments indicated that they felt safer there compared to shelters. “There’s a lot of violence that goes on, and in encampments, there’s a sense of community,” she explained. As these encampments face potential dismantling, more people are left searching for safe places to sleep each night.

Ryan Frick, the director of social media and communications for Urban Wagons, noted an increase in individuals experiencing economic hardship. “We see a lot of people that are being affected by inflation, by budgets that are really tight and that money isn’t just going as far as it used to,” he remarked.

Frick emphasized the need for specific winter clothing items, including jackets and men’s socks, as well as summer necessities such as water, shorts, and shirts. Urban Wagons is also accepting any type of food donations at any time, further assisting those in need.

As temperatures drop and the demand for support rises, organizations like Urban Wagons continue to play a crucial role in the community. More information about their efforts and how to help can be found on their website.
