Manitoba Cat Rescue Launches Program to Connect Seniors with Cats

A cat rescue organization in Manitoba is initiating a program aimed at connecting seniors with feline companions. Whisker Warriors Manitoba has introduced the Silver Whiskers initiative, designed to pair cats that may not adapt well to busy households or other pets with individuals aged 60 and older. This program seeks to provide companionship for both the seniors and the cats in need of homes.

Dana Shaw, one of the founders of Whisker Warriors Manitoba, emphasized the dual benefits of the program. “This is going to be the best case scenario for the cats, and it gives seniors a chance to have a companion, whether it’s for six months or six years,” she stated. Under the Silver Whiskers program, all associated costs—including food, litter, and veterinary bills—will be covered by the rescue. Should a senior find they can no longer care for their cat, Whisker Warriors will take the animal back, ensuring a safety net for both parties. “The only thing the senior has to do is provide the cat a loving home,” Shaw added.

Concerns about the financial burden of pet ownership have been expressed by many seniors, and Shaw hopes this initiative will alleviate those worries. Cats available for adoption through this program will be identified as “comfort cats” on the organization’s website. Currently, five cats fall into this category: Mojo, Nevaeh, Rocket, Daisy, and Delilah. Should a senior wish to adopt one of these comfort cats permanently, they will be able to do so at a reduced fee.

Benefits of Pet Companionship for Seniors

Research supports the notion that pet ownership can significantly enhance mental well-being, particularly among older adults. Corey Mackenzie, a professor of clinical psychology at the University of Manitoba, highlights the potential benefits of having a pet, stating, “Reductions in symptoms of anxiety and depression, increases in connectedness and companionship, and reductions in loneliness” are just a few of the positive outcomes. Although much of the existing research has focused on dogs, Mackenzie believes that similar benefits apply to cats.

The relationship that forms between pets and their owners is often deep and meaningful. Mackenzie noted, “There’s a really interesting relationship that develops between species, but it’s a really strong, often very positive relationship that people have with pets.” Furthermore, he pointed out that caring for an animal can instill a heightened sense of purpose and meaning in life, which can be especially beneficial for seniors.

Current Promotions and Adoption Information

Whisker Warriors Manitoba is also running a promotion throughout March 2025, offering all cats over seven months of age for a reduced fee of $99, down from the regular $175. Individuals interested in joining the comfort cat program or looking to adopt a cat can fill out the adoption form available online.

Since its inception in August 2025, Whisker Warriors Manitoba has successfully placed over 60 cats into new homes and currently has approximately another 60 cats in foster care. The Silver Whiskers program represents a new chapter in the organization’s mission to improve the lives of both cats and seniors in the community.
