Kettle Valley Steam Railway Marks 30 Years of Heritage and Service

The Kettle Valley Steam Railway celebrated its 30th anniversary on September 20, 2023, with a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony and cake to mark the milestone. This event honored the railway’s history and acknowledged the contributions of its crews, volunteers, and staff throughout the years.
The steam railway began operations in 1995, attracting more than 350,000 passengers since its inception. The railway runs a distance of 16 kilometres between the communities of Trout Creek and Faulder, operating as a preserved railway that showcases a significant part of local history.
Historical Significance of the Railway
The Kettle Valley Railway originally served as a vital transportation route for both passengers and freight in the Okanagan region. Passenger service commenced in May 1915 and continued until January 1964, when the railway ceased operations. Today, the steam railway stands as a reminder of this legacy, preserving an important chapter of the region’s transportation history.
The tourist train features a 1912 locomotive that was built in Montreal for the Canadian Pacific Railway. This historic engine pulls both enclosed and open-air passenger cars, offering visitors a unique experience as they travel through the picturesque landscapes of British Columbia.
Looking Forward
As the Kettle Valley Steam Railway looks to the future, the management aims to continue enhancing the visitor experience while maintaining the historical integrity of the railway. The anniversary served as an opportunity to reflect not only on the past but also on plans for future events and improvements to the service.
The celebration brought together community members and railway enthusiasts, reinforcing the importance of this heritage railway in connecting people with the region’s history. With ongoing support from the community, the Kettle Valley Steam Railway is poised to welcome many more passengers in the years to come, ensuring that this cherished railway continues to thrive.
