Approximately 65 community members gathered at Aldergrove Heritage Hall on January 1, 2024, to celebrate the New Year at a family-friendly Community Dinner and Dance. This event served not only as a festive occasion but also as a fundraiser for the Aldergrove Veterans and Seniors Society, which aims to raise $35,000 for a new roof.

The dinner, organized in collaboration with the Aldergrove Heritage Hall, featured a turkey and ham meal, complemented by a variety of entertainment options. Participants enjoyed an evening filled with games, music, and dancing, all designed to foster connections among families, children, and seniors. According to Diana Mohtar, a member of the executive panel of the Aldergrove Veterans and Seniors Society, the event was intended to unite the two nonprofits while providing a fun experience for all ages.

While the event successfully brought the community together, it raised approximately $700 to $800 after covering expenses. Mohtar expressed optimism despite the modest funds generated, noting the event’s success given the limited planning time.

Attendees relished the home-cooked meal, which included gluten-free options prepared by volunteers from the veterans and seniors society. Desserts were generously donated by volunteers from St. Anne’s and St. Joachim Catholic Churches, as well as Langley Meals on Wheels (LMOW). Local businesses contributed door prizes that included grocery items, cinema tickets, and various gifts from Christmas markets.

The entirely volunteer-led event showcased the efforts of a dedicated team, including a LMOW volunteer who not only assisted with decorations but also emceed the event. The evening’s activities featured music bingo, door prizes, and a “Jingle Bell Rock” dance video that got many guests on their feet. A highlight of the night was the 9 p.m. ball drop, synchronized with the celebration in Ottawa, which added to the festive atmosphere.

Organizers expressed their appreciation for the diverse mix of generations that attended. Mohtar noted, “Families, kids, and seniors all sitting together, meeting new people.” The event marked a successful inaugural celebration, with one seven-year-old attendee asking their father if they could return next year.

Looking ahead, organizers are hopeful that planning for another community New Year’s celebration will commence later this year, aiming to build on the connections fostered during this successful gathering.
