Saskatchewan Issues Drug Alert for Potent Medetomidine
The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health has issued a drug alert regarding the veterinary sedative medetomidine, which has increasingly been found in substances sold as opioids. This drug, which is approximately 20 times stronger than fentanyl, does not respond to naloxone, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses. The alert aims to inform users about the heightened risks associated with this potent substance.
According to Prairie Harm Reduction (PHR), many individuals purchasing drugs are unaware that they may contain medetomidine. This lack of awareness poses significant dangers, particularly for regular fentanyl users who have not developed a tolerance. “These people end up being unsuspecting victims of an unregulated drug supply,” stated PHR paramedic Stacia Robinson.
The previous alert concerning medetomidine in Saskatchewan was issued in November 2025. The current warning follows alarming trends, including a record number of drug poisoning calls in British Columbia. Last week, medetomidine-related poisonings prompted emergency services in B.C. to respond to 256 drug poisoning calls in a single day.
Medetomidine poses serious health risks, including dangerously low heart rates, slowed breathing, and fluctuations in blood pressure, which can lead to prolonged sedation. As users become increasingly aware of the contaminants in their drugs, many are taking action. “People get concerned, and it encourages them to come get their drugs tested because they don’t want to end up in the same boat,” Robinson added.
The rise in alerts and the response from users indicate a growing awareness of the risks associated with unregulated drug supplies. Health officials continue to stress the importance of testing substances to prevent accidental overdoses and fatalities. As the situation develops, authorities remain vigilant in monitoring the prevalence of medetomidine and its impact on public health.
