Bringing Hearts Home Campaign Surpasses $25 Million Milestone
A local fundraising initiative focused on enhancing cardiac care in southern Alberta has made significant progress, raising nearly $25 million towards its ambitious $30 million target. The Bringing Hearts Home Campaign, which commenced in September 2024, aims to establish new cardiac care centers in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat.
Crystal Elliott, CEO of the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation, emphasized the importance of this achievement, noting it reflects the community’s strong commitment to improving cardiac services. “This progress reflects extraordinary community belief,” Elliott stated. “At the same time, the work is not finished. I remember how challenging it was to raise our first five to six million dollars, and our final five to six million will require the same determination, focus, and partnership, alongside continued government collaboration.”
The campaign has garnered over 750 donations from residents across southern Alberta. Dr. Sayeh Zielke, the Cardiac Sciences Physician Lead at Alberta Health Services (AHS), highlighted the urgency of timely access to cardiac care. “Timely access to cardiac care close to home is critical to improving outcomes,” she remarked, underscoring the impact that delays can have on families in the region.
Enhancements to Cardiac Services
The funds raised will support vital improvements at both the Chinook Regional Hospital and Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. Planned upgrades include a new cardiac catheterization lab, a dedicated electrophysiology lab, two echocardiography labs, as well as advanced cardiac MRI and CT scanners. Additionally, the campaign aims to expand cardiac ICU capacity to better serve patients.
Cardiac disease remains a pressing health issue in southern Alberta, where mortality rates are approximately 29.6% higher than the provincial average, and heart attack rates exceed the provincial figures by 15.5%. These statistics highlight the critical need for enhanced cardiac care facilities in the area.
The Bringing Hearts Home Campaign is set to conclude at the end of 2026, with organizers still seeking an additional $5 million to achieve their goal. Community members interested in contributing can find more information on the campaign’s website at CRHFoundation.ca.
The efforts of the campaign demonstrate not only the community’s resolve but also the vital importance of accessible cardiac care for the well-being of residents in southern Alberta. As the campaign continues its work, the focus remains on building a healthier future for all.
