Lethbridge Welcomes Six New Doctors, Enhancing Healthcare Access
Lethbridge has seen the addition of six new doctors in the third quarter of 2025, according to the latest report from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. This increase, effective from July 1 to September 30, brings the total number of fully registered physicians in the city to 317. While many residents still face challenges in securing a primary care physician, these figures suggest a gradual improvement in healthcare resources.
The increase of six doctors represents a notable change from the previous quarter, as well as an increase of four compared to the same period last year. Over the past three years, Lethbridge has experienced a net growth of 43 physicians, rising from 274 in the third quarter of 2022. This trend aligns with broader healthcare developments in the region, as Medicine Hat also welcomed six new doctors in the last three months, while Brooks saw a decrease of one physician.
Regional Healthcare Developments
In total, the South Health Zone has reported an increase of 18 doctors over the past year. This number encompasses both specialists and non-specialists, indicating a positive shift in healthcare availability across the region.
As of now, resources such as AlbertaFindADoctor.ca highlight that several family physicians are accepting new patients at various clinics. Notable locations include The Wild Rose Clinic in Lethbridge, Coulee Medical Clinic in Taber, Picture Butte Medical Clinic, and Cardston Medical Clinic. These clinics are crucial for residents seeking primary care and help alleviate the strain on the healthcare system.
In a broader context, Alberta has seen a total of 442 new physicians registered to practice in the province during Q3 of this year. Notably, approximately 77.6% of these new registrations occurred in the major urban centers of Calgary and Edmonton.
The increase in physician numbers is an encouraging development for healthcare in Alberta, particularly in regions like Lethbridge where access to primary care has been a growing concern. The ongoing efforts to attract and retain healthcare professionals will be vital in addressing the needs of the community. With these recent additions, Lethbridge is moving toward improving healthcare accessibility and ensuring that more residents can receive the medical attention they require.
