Lethbridge Increases Physician Numbers with Six New Additions
The city of Lethbridge has welcomed six new doctors in the third quarter of 2025, bringing the total number of registered physicians to 317. This increase, reported by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, marks a notable improvement in the local healthcare landscape, although many residents still face challenges in accessing primary care.
The report covers the period from July 1 to September 30, 2025, and indicates a growth of four physicians compared to the same quarter last year. Over the past three years, Lethbridge has seen a net increase of 43 doctors, up from 274 physicians in the third quarter of 2022. This positive trend in physician availability aims to address ongoing concerns regarding access to healthcare services in the region.
Regional Trends in Healthcare Access
In addition to Lethbridge, the nearby city of Medicine Hat has also added six new physicians during the same three-month period. Conversely, Brooks experienced a slight decline, losing one doctor. Overall, the South Health Zone has seen an increase of 18 physicians over the past year, which includes both specialists and general practitioners.
As of now, the online resource AlbertaFindADoctor.ca indicates that several clinics in the area are accepting new patients. Notable facilities include the Wild Rose Clinic in Lethbridge, the Coulee Medical Clinic in Taber, the Picture Butte Medical Clinic, and the Cardston Medical Clinic. This availability is crucial for residents seeking primary care, particularly amid the ongoing demand for healthcare services.
The broader context reveals significant growth across the province, with a total of 442 new physicians registered in Alberta during the third quarter of this year. Approximately 77.6 percent of these new practitioners are based in Calgary or Edmonton, highlighting a concentration of medical resources in these urban centers.
The ongoing efforts to bolster physician numbers reflect a commitment to improving healthcare access in Alberta. The quarterly physician resource statistics provide valuable insights into the evolving landscape of medical services, which remain critical for meeting the needs of the population.
