Sackville Library Seeks Expansion to Meet Growing Demand

The Sackville Public Library is exploring options for a larger, more accessible facility to accommodate its expanding user base. The current building, which has been in operation since 1984, falls significantly short of the 8,200 square feet recommended by the provincial library service. According to Merrill Fullerton, chair of the library board, the usable space of the library is limited to approximately 2,600 square feet, which hampers its ability to effectively serve the community.

The library’s current layout restricts access to its basement, which can only be reached by stairs. This limitation confines the available space for books, computer workstations, and programming areas to the main floor. Fullerton expressed concern, stating it is “a far cry” from the space needed to adequately support Sackville’s population of 6,099, as recorded in the 2021 census. While the provincial government has conducted a needs assessment, they are unable to share the document publicly since it remains in draft form.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

Fullerton recently addressed the Tantramar council, appealing for assistance in finding a suitable new location for the library. He emphasized the importance of collaboration, suggesting that the library could serve as an anchor tenant in a new multipurpose building. This facility could accommodate various community needs, such as hosting the local farmers’ market, arts events, and other public activities.

“We are open to any proposal that meets the community’s requirements,” Fullerton stated, indicating a willingness to explore private partnerships or leasing options, similar to how the municipality currently leases space for the Dorchester Public Library from the Westmorland Historical Society. He believes a multipurpose facility could serve as a hub for various community services, enhancing the overall value to residents.

The idea of a new multipurpose municipal building has been a recurring topic in Sackville for decades. Michael Tower, a member of the Tantramar council and liaison to the library board, noted that discussions have traditionally stalled due to high costs and the challenges of locating a suitable site.

Challenges and Commitment to Fundraising

As the conversation around a new facility progresses, the Sackville Farmers’ Market has also expressed interest in a permanent year-round location. Market chair Greg Burton highlighted the necessity of collaboration, stating that the market alone cannot fund the project. He welcomed the library board’s involvement, which could lend additional support to the initiative.

Fullerton indicated that the library board is prepared to engage in fundraising efforts once the vision for the new building becomes clear. He emphasized the need for the municipality to provide direction on how the library’s requirements can align with broader community needs. “We recognize that this will take many years to develop, but we want to see the process officially commence,” he remarked.

The library’s current constraints necessitate additional space for an estimated 10,000 more books and accessible program areas. Tower acknowledged the urgency of the situation as Sackville’s population continues to grow. He noted that the incoming council, following elections on May 11, 2023, will need to prioritize discussions regarding future library and multipurpose building projects.

With the growing demand for library services and community engagement, the Sackville Public Library’s expansion plans are poised to address both immediate needs and long-term growth. The potential for a collaborative multipurpose facility presents an opportunity to enhance community resources while ensuring accessibility for all residents.
