Liam Young has been appointed as the new vice-principal of Bishop Smith Catholic High School in Pembroke, effective January 1, 2026. This announcement came from the Renfrew County Catholic District School Board, highlighting Young’s extensive background in education and special needs teaching.

Young has been a part of the Bishop Smith community since returning to Canada in 2021. He initially joined the board in 2019 as an occasional teacher before gaining valuable experience abroad. During a two-year tenure in the United Kingdom, he focused on supporting students with special needs and at-risk youth. Upon his return, he held various teaching positions, including long-term roles at Cathedral and St. James schools, before serving as a permanent teacher at Valleycrest Public School from 2023 to 2025.

His recent role as a special education teacher at Bishop Smith has equipped him with insights that the school board believes will benefit his upcoming administrative duties.

Leadership Vision and Community Engagement

Mark Searson, the director of education for the RCCDSB, expressed confidence in Young’s ability to contribute positively to the school environment. “Liam’s focus on the success of all students, particularly at-risk youth, and his prior experience in the UK education system bring a unique and valuable perspective,” Searson stated. He emphasized that Young would build upon the strong foundation of the school community and inspire both staff and students to achieve their potential.

In his acceptance of the role, Young conveyed enthusiasm for the opportunity to lead. “I am deeply honoured and incredibly excited to accept the role of vice-principal at Bishop Smith Catholic High School,” he said. Young acknowledged the dedication of the school’s staff and the potential of its students, expressing a commitment to ensuring that every student has the chance to succeed and thrive. His focus on inclusivity and high achievement aligns with the school’s mission.

Julie Huckabone, the principal of Bishop Smith Catholic High School, welcomed Young’s appointment, describing him as a strong addition to the administrative team. “We are thrilled that Liam will be joining the administration team at Bishop Smith Catholic High School,” Huckabone noted. She highlighted Young’s established rapport with the staff and his dedication to student well-being as key factors in his suitability for this leadership position.

The school board looks forward to integrating Young into its leadership team, confident that his experience and vision will enhance the school’s environment and educational offerings.
