Sunshine Coast School District Initiates Comprehensive Inclusion Review
School District 46 has launched a district-wide Inclusion Review aimed at enhancing support for all learners. This initiative was announced during the Board of Education meeting on December 10, as outlined in the monthly report from Superintendent Kate Kerr.
The review seeks to evaluate how inclusive education is implemented throughout the district. Kerr stated, “This process will consider how inclusive education is delivered across the district and ensure that our practices reflect current evidence, support effective use of resources, and promote consistent, high-quality experiences for students, families, and staff.”
Focus Areas of the Review
The comprehensive review will assess various aspects, including systems, processes, resource allocation, and policies related to inclusive education. It aims to ensure that these elements align with the recently updated Inclusive Education Services manual from the Ministry of Education and Child Care, while also being responsive to local needs.
To facilitate this process, the district has engaged Rick Ryan, a former deputy superintendent of the Richmond School District, as a consultant. Kerr highlighted that Ryan brings extensive experience in district leadership, system planning, counselling, and inclusive education.
During the board meeting, trustees inquired about the timeline for results. Kerr responded that the review is in its preliminary stages, noting, “There is a lot of homework and a lot of things to look at and research.” She added, “We will have more information as the months go by… I would think we’d be able to bring something back, certainly, even in an informal update in a few months.”
Commitment to Continuous Improvement
Kerr emphasized the district’s commitment to excellence in inclusive education, stating, “We know we do excellent work with inclusive education. And I think it’s really important that we’re constantly looking at how we can keep transforming, keep doing even better with our practices.”
The Inclusion Review represents a significant step towards ensuring that all students receive the support they need to thrive academically and socially. As the district continues this initiative, updates will be provided to keep the community informed of progress and findings.
