The Dixon School Board has officially appointed Melydi Huyett as the new superintendent for Dixon Public Schools, effective from July 1, 2026. Huyett is currently serving as the principal at Centennial Elementary School in Polo, Illinois, and will succeed Margo Empen, who plans to retire in July 2026. The board unanimously approved Huyett’s three-year contract during a meeting held on December 17, 2023.

In her new role, Huyett expressed enthusiasm for contributing to the school district. “I am truly honored to be a part of and serve Dixon Public Schools,” she stated. Huyett aims to collaborate with students, staff, and community partners to enhance educational outcomes for the district.

Huyett brings over 20 years of experience in public education, with a robust background in instructional leadership and district administration. Her previous work at Centennial Elementary includes initiatives in mathematics and English language arts development, as well as significant efforts in grant writing and technology implementation.

Recognition and Qualifications

During her career, Huyett has been acknowledged for her leadership abilities. In 2015, she received the Award of Excellence from the Illinois State Board of Education as part of the Those Who Excel awards program. She holds a doctorate in education from Aurora University and has earned her chief school business official degree from Northern Illinois University.

Board President Linda Wegner praised Huyett’s character, stating, “I believe that Dr. Huyett will approach every decision with kindness and respect.” Wegner noted that Huyett, a lifelong resident of Dixon and a product of the local school system, views this appointment as an opportunity to give back to the community that shaped her.

The school board began preparations for Huyett’s appointment and Empen’s retirement in October 2024, engaging the Illinois Association of School Boards to conduct the search at a cost of $8,400. The official search process commenced in June 2025.

Transition Plans Ahead of New Leadership

During the recent board meeting, Vice President Brandon Rogers emphasized the importance of being intentional during the transition period before Huyett officially takes office. Board Secretary Melissa Gates suggested organizing informal meet-and-greet events, though no official gatherings have been announced yet.

Huyett’s contract stipulates that she must establish residency within the district within one year of her start date. Her annual salary for the 2026-2027 contract year will amount to $150,000, with an increase of 3% for each subsequent year of her contract.

As Dixon Public Schools prepares for this new chapter, Huyett’s extensive experience and commitment to the community set a promising foundation for future educational advancements.
