Algonquin and Lakeshore School Board Achieves High Graduation Rates
The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB) has achieved notable recognition for its graduation rates, ranking among the top 12 out of 72 school boards in Ontario. This achievement places the ALCDSB fourth among all English-speaking school boards in the province, according to a recent assessment involving data from the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) for the 2023-2024 academic year.
This ranking reflects consistent performance over the past four years, with graduation rates exceeding the provincial average. The graduation rate for the 2020-2021 academic year stood at an impressive 91.4 percent. Such figures demonstrate the board’s commitment to ensuring that students have the necessary support to complete their education successfully.
Support Strategies for Student Success
ALCDSB Superintendent of Education, Sonya Melim, emphasized that these results are a clear indication of the board’s dedication to supporting at-risk students. “Through a tiered system of intervention and individualized programming, the board ensures that every student receives the support they need to achieve success,” Melim stated. She expressed pride in the graduation rates, calling them a testament to the hard work and commitment to fostering excellence within the educational environment.
To receive an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, students must fulfill several criteria. They are required to complete a total of 30 credits, which include 17 compulsory and 13 elective courses. Additionally, students must pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, complete 40 hours of community service, and obtain a minimum of two online credits.
This comprehensive approach to education not only focuses on academic achievement but also encourages community involvement and essential life skills, contributing to the overall development of students within the ALCDSB.
The board’s focus on intervention and personalized education strategies appears to be yielding positive results, fostering an environment where students are equipped to succeed both academically and personally. As the ALCDSB continues to prioritize student support, it sets a benchmark for educational excellence within Ontario.
