Campbell River Celebrates Family Literacy Week with Engaging Events
The **Campbell River Literacy Association** has announced the upcoming **Family Literacy Week 2026**, scheduled from **January 24 to 30, 2026**. This year’s theme, **“Let’s Make Mealtime Family Learning Time,”** aims to highlight the learning opportunities that arise during everyday activities, particularly mealtime and grocery shopping.
According to **Kat Eddy**, Executive Director and event organizer, many parents overlook the educational potential these moments provide. “Parents are busy and sometimes don’t realize the learning, conversation, and connection opportunities that can happen during everyday tasks like grocery shopping,” Eddy stated. The association aims to remind families that they are their children’s first and best teachers, emphasizing that learning can occur in various settings.
During this week, families with children aged **2 to 12** can participate in a grocery store scavenger hunt designed to facilitate shared learning experiences while shopping. This initiative encourages playful interaction and discovery, reinforcing the importance of family involvement in education.
Community Events and Activities
All events throughout Family Literacy Week will be free and family-friendly. Among the highlights is the **grocery store scavenger hunt**, which can be completed in any community, making it accessible for all participants. Digital downloads for the scavenger hunt will be available on the association’s website, **literacyforall.ca**, and paper copies will be provided at various events.
The **Tidemark Theatre** will support the initiative through its **Angels program**, hosting a community show on **Tuesday, January 27**, featuring **Kym Gouchie**, a Juno-nominated performer. This event will provide entertainment while promoting the values of learning together as a family.
The week will kick off with an evening adventure through the exhibits at the **Maritime Heritage Centre** on **January 24**. Additionally, families can enjoy a free community swim at **Strathcona Gardens** on **Sunday, January 25**, from **1:00 to 3:00 p.m.**
A complete schedule of events will be published on the **Campbell River Literacy Association’s** social media channels, ensuring families have easy access to all activities planned for the week.
Family Literacy Week 2026 encourages families to learn, play, and connect, transforming ordinary moments into opportunities for discovery, conversation, and shared learning experiences. By participating in these activities, families can foster a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.
