Campbell River Launches Family Literacy Week 2026 with Engaging Activities
The Campbell River Literacy Association has officially announced the upcoming Family Literacy Week 2026, scheduled from January 24 to 30. This year’s theme, “Let’s Make Mealtime Family Learning Time,” encourages families to incorporate learning experiences into their everyday routines, particularly during meals and grocery shopping.
According to Kat Eddy, the Executive Director of the association and event organizer, “Parents are busy and sometimes don’t realize the learning, conversation, and connection opportunities that can happen during everyday tasks like grocery shopping.” The initiative aims to highlight the importance of parental involvement in education, underscoring that families serve as their children’s first and best teachers.
Engaging Activities for Families
A notable feature of Family Literacy Week is a grocery store scavenger hunt designed for children aged 2 to 12. This activity allows parents and their children to learn together while navigating grocery stores in their communities. Digital resources for the scavenger hunt will be available for download at literacyforall.ca, and printed copies will be distributed at various events throughout the week.
The week-long celebration will include a variety of free, family-friendly activities. One of the highlights is a community performance on Tuesday, January 27, featuring Kym Gouchie, a Juno-nominated performer, supported by the Tidemark Theatre Angels program. The event aims to foster a sense of community and provide entertainment that reinforces the themes of learning and connection.
The festivities will kick off at the Maritime Heritage Centre on January 24 with an evening adventure through the exhibits. Additionally, families can enjoy a free community swim at Strathcona Gardens on Sunday, January 25, from 13:00 to 15:00, providing further opportunities for interaction and engagement.
Connecting Through Learning
Family Literacy Week 2026 aims to transform ordinary moments into opportunities for discovery and conversation. The Campbell River Literacy Association encourages families to participate in activities that enhance learning while having fun together. A full schedule of events will be available on the association’s social media channels, providing families with information on how to get involved.
Through this initiative, the Campbell River Literacy Association hopes to reinforce the idea that learning can occur in various settings, not just within the confines of a classroom. By making the most of everyday activities, families can strengthen their bonds while fostering a love for learning in their children. Families are invited to join in and discover the joy of learning together, making the most of Family Literacy Week 2026.
