Air Canada Expands Reimbursement Options Following Flight Cancellations

Air Canada has announced an expansion of its reimbursement policy for customers affected by flight cancellations during last week’s strike. Passengers who had flights cancelled between August 15 and August 23, 2023, may now qualify for reimbursement for alternative travel and out-of-pocket expenses.
The updated policy applies not only to those who purchased tickets directly from Air Canada but also to customers who booked through travel agencies or Aeroplan. This initiative allows a broader range of passengers to submit reimbursement requests via an online form provided by the airline.
The airline clarified that the policy is specifically for flights that Air Canada was unable to rebook. In instances where passengers made alternative arrangements on their own, they are now eligible for compensation. Notably, customers who booked their original flights through another carrier are advised to seek reimbursement from that airline, as Air Canada will only cover the difference in costs related to alternative travel.
In a move to further support affected passengers, Air Canada expanded its reimbursement options to include “reasonable expenses” for hotel stays, meals, and other related costs incurred due to the cancellations. This change was announced just a day after the initial reimbursement policy was introduced on Wednesday.
As of Saturday, Air Canada reported that its operations are nearing full capacity following the three-day flight attendants’ strike. The airline indicated that 99 percent of domestic, U.S., and international flights are expected to operate normally over the next 24 hours, reflecting a significant recovery in its services.
The airline’s swift response to passenger needs during this disruption underscores its commitment to customer service. Passengers affected by the cancellations are encouraged to review the updated reimbursement policy and submit their claims accordingly.
