Bridging the Gap: Enhancing Interpersonal Skills in the Workplace
The rise of the “Gen Z stare” has sparked discussion about the interpersonal skills of younger employees in the workplace. This term, popularized on social media platforms like TikTok, describes a blank, often emotionless expression that many in Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, exhibit during social interactions. While some older generations interpret this demeanor as rudeness or a lack of social skills, many Gen Z individuals see it as an alternative means of communication or a strategy to manage repetitive queries.
Observations from Peter Duris, CEO and Co-Founder of the AI-driven career app Kickresume, shed light on this emerging workforce dynamic. Duris emphasizes that the “Gen Z stare” may not necessarily indicate disinterest but rather a need for development in interpersonal communication skills. Many younger employees, particularly those new to the workforce, are still honing these vital soft skills.
Understanding the Need for Improvement
Duris points out that this issue is most visible in customer service roles, where positive engagement is essential. He remarks, “If younger workers often find it awkward and difficult to engage with customers and colleagues, it may be because they need support and guidance when it comes to improving their social skills.” The importance of fostering effective communication cannot be overstated, especially in environments where customer interaction is key.
To assist younger employees in enhancing their interpersonal skills, Duris offers several practical strategies:
1. **Engage with Colleagues**: Initiating conversations with coworkers can significantly boost social skills. Using the FORD method—which stands for family, occupation, recreation, and dreams—can help facilitate appropriate discussions that foster rapport.
2. **Practice Customer Engagement**: For those in customer-facing positions, starting small conversations with patrons can make a difference. Simple gestures, such as asking how a customer’s day is going, can lead to stronger relationships and improved social abilities over time.
3. **Prioritize Greetings**: A friendly “Hello, how are you today?” can create a welcoming atmosphere for both colleagues and customers. These interactions not only make others feel valued but also help in building a foundation for further communication.
Strategies for Businesses and Managers
Employers also play a crucial role in helping their teams develop interpersonal skills. Duris recommends several initiatives for managers:
– **Plan Social Events**: Organizing team-building activities can create a relaxed environment that encourages employees to socialize. This approach may help more reserved team members feel comfortable opening up.
– **Encourage Regular Meetings**: Frequent team gatherings should not be solely focused on work-related topics. These interactions can provide an opportunity for employees to connect on a personal level, which can enhance overall team communication.
– **Provide One-on-One Support**: For employees struggling with communication, a private conversation can be beneficial. This personalized approach allows managers to address specific concerns and offer guidance in a supportive manner.
In conclusion, improving interpersonal skills in the workplace is essential for both Generation Z employees and their employers. By understanding the nuances behind the “Gen Z stare” and implementing effective strategies, businesses can cultivate a more communicative and engaged workforce. This effort not only benefits individual employees but also contributes to a positive organizational culture that values collaboration and connection.
