Winnipeg Man Charged After Serious Assault at Downtown Shelter
A serious assault at a downtown shelter in Winnipeg has left a 55-year-old man with a life-altering injury. The incident occurred on March 18, 2024, shortly after 07:30 a.m. at a facility located on Disraeli Freeway, where the victim and a 41-year-old man were waiting in line for coffee. According to the Winnipeg Police Service, a dispute escalated into violence when one man punched the other in the face, resulting in broken glasses and the victim being knocked to the ground.
Police confirmed that the victim was transported to a local hospital, where he is currently in stable condition. However, he sustained significant injuries that may have lasting effects. The assailant fled the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement.
Warrant Issued for Arrest
Following the incident, authorities issued a warrant for the suspect’s arrest. The search concluded successfully two days later when police located the 41-year-old man on Stanley Street. He was subsequently charged with aggravated assault and has since been released on an undertaking.
At this time, law enforcement has not disclosed the names of either the suspect or the victim. The investigation continues as police gather further details surrounding the incident.
The Winnipeg Police Service encourages anyone with additional information to come forward to assist in their ongoing inquiry.
