Victoria Council Launches Initiative to Tackle Rising Rat Population

The Victoria City Council has taken steps to address a growing rat population following persistent complaints from residents. In a recent committee meeting, Coun. Stephen Hammond proposed a motion urging city staff to explore effective solutions, particularly during building demolitions and significant renovations. This initiative comes in response to concerns raised by residents in North Park regarding an influx of rats linked to the demolition of properties at 926 and 930 Pandora.

Residents voiced their frustrations over the increasing rodent presence, attributing it directly to the construction activities in their neighborhood. Hammond noted that while the issue of rats is widely acknowledged in Victoria, the current situation has escalated. He stated, “These residents know of rats in Victoria… but they’re smart enough to know that this is very different, and they know with certainty that the proliferation of this rodent invasion was directly related to the demolition of those buildings.”

In light of these concerns, the motion was amended to broaden its scope, allowing staff to look into best practices for managing rodent populations in any buildings where they are known to congregate. Coun. Marg Gardiner, who supported the amendment, shared her own experiences with the rodent issue. “When I first moved to the area, when the furniture was moved out of the house I moved into, I saw rodent droppings everywhere. I was just stunned at how many there were,” she recalled.

The problem has not been limited to North Park. Last year, the council received multiple complaints from different areas within the city, including reports of rodents in rental buildings and supportive housing, as well as in neglected lots. Gardiner emphasized the need for immediate action, stating that the issue has reached a level that cannot be ignored.

The committee unanimously passed the motion, which will soon return to the full council for a final vote. If approved, the initiative aims to implement measures that can effectively control and reduce the rat population in Victoria, addressing the concerns of residents and ensuring public health safety.

As the city grapples with this ongoing issue, the council’s proactive approach signals a commitment to enhancing community well-being and maintaining public spaces. The outcome of the upcoming vote will determine the next steps in tackling the rodent problem that has increasingly alarmed residents across the city.
